History

Establishment of Government Press at Bengaluru can be traced back to period earlier than independence to around 1866 AD.  Office/Building of this press was constructed beside Vidhana Soudha during 1871 AD (for construction of Vikasa Soudha this place was vacated).  This building was older than Vidhana Soudha from where the printing requirements for the erstwhile British Government were carried.

The Mysore Gazette was started in 1866 under the authority of the Commissioner of Mysore with Mr. L. Ricketts as Editor and the first issue was published on 7th April 1866.  Among others History of India was one of the major publications of that time.

During that time, all the printing was done in the Government Press almost entirely by means of five hand press machines including a staff of thirty persons. Later in 1896 gas and steam powered  Printing Machines were installed. In the year 1907, the same was replaced by electric powered Printing Machines.

After the Independence to cater all the requirements with regard to Printing, Stationery and Publication for the State of Mysuru, was met by the Department. As and when situation arose construction of New Building, along with recruitment of staff were started.

On reorganization of the states in 1956, the new state of Mysuru inherited a small press from erstwhile Coorg Government.  In 1962 a branch press was started in Dharwada of Bombay Karnataka region and at Gulbarga of Hyderabad Karnataka region in 1963 was started.  Mysuru Press which existed since 1888 was merged with this department in 1964 and later it was converted exclusively for text book printing.  Separate section was built for the purpose of printing of ballot papers in 1962.
